This post is for you.

I’ll explain 6 steps you can use to increase your speed and become faster with and without the ball.

Personally…

I’ve used these steps to increase my speed over the years. Even older players can get faster if they apply these helpful speed building principles.

Many players have used these tips to increase running speed and because of this have become more dangerous and influential players on the pitch.

Read this entire post and you will:

  • feel slightly faster in 1 day

Learn How To Run Faster

If you want to know how to sprint faster and improve your speed, I can help you with that because I’ve done it myself and I had every excuse in. the book not to.

Let’s start by talking about “genetics“.

Obviously…

Some players are blessed with natural speed. Others are not. If you are in the second category, this is not an excuse for being slow. Even a “slow player” can become faster and I am a perfect example of this.

My whole youth career I was slow.

Looking back, I have to admit that was my fault. I accepted that I was slow and didn’t do anything to change it. My mentality was holding me back from becoming faster.

Whether you are slow or simply want to learn how to improve your speed to become even faster…

It is possible to become faster.

I’m still surprised today when my teammates consider me one of the faster players on the team. I was not blessed with natural speed. It was something I developed over time and you can do the same.

So the first rule about How To Become Faster is…

Believe it’s possible

The second rule about How To Become Faster is…

Focus on yourself.
Don’t focus on other players.

You don’t need to be the fastest player on the pitch.

But…

You do need to be the fastest version of yourself.

With that in mind…

Let’s get into the details of exactly How To Get Faster & Increase Your Speed. I’m going to start by showing you a video I created about 6 simple steps anyone can use to get faster in a relatively short period of time.

If you’re nervous about your next game / practice you might benefit from the “prematch success guide” – 10 principles to eliminate nerves and improve the quality of your game day performances.

How To Run Faster (Step 1)

Practice sprinting.

I know this sounds so stupid but seriously everyone wants to get faster but very players actually practice the skill of being fast.

We show up to games and wish we could run faster but we haven’t practiced running fast all week.

It doesn’t make sense!

Simply practicing sprinting will improve your speed instantly.

how to get faster at running

How To Become Faster Action Step #1:
Add five 20 yard sprints to the end of your warmup (complete at least x3 per week).

How To Run Faster (Step 2)

Improve sprint technique.

Speed is a skill. Yet, most players don’t look at it this way. Change the way you approach speed development and focus on improving the skill.

If you wanted to get better at shooting, you would analyze your technique, make adjustments, and practice until you saw improvements.

You wouldn’t keep making the same mistakes and expect to get better results. Therefore, you shouldn’t do this when hoping to become faster.

If you want to improve you speed, you need to analyze your sprinting technique and make adjustments. Every time you sprint ask yourself how can move differently in order to sprint faster.

Never sprint to get tired. Sprint with the purpose of getting faster. Rest longer if needed because the purpose of practicing the sprint is to go as fast as you can.

How To Become Faster Action Step #2:
Focus on improving your technique every time you sprint.

Technical areas to focus on when learning how to sprint faster:

  • Foot positioning
  • Foot strike technique
  • Forward lean (upper body positioning)
  • Knee drive & paw back
  • Butt kick
  • Arm pump

If you’re nervous about your next game / practice you might benefit from the “prematch success guide” – 10 principles to eliminate nerves and improve the quality of your game day performances.

How To Run Faster (Step 3)

Learn how to push harder physically & mentally.

This is a tough concept to grasp but I need you to understand that you are capable of producing more force than you realize.

Each time you sprint, you’ll be focusing on your sprinting technique. Moving more efficiently. This will increase your speed.

But…

Now, I need you to focus on pushing harder each time you sprint.

Pushing the ground behind you with more aggression. Pumping your arms with more power. Driving your knees forward with more force.

You have to train your legs, arms, and body to produce more power. This will only come with practice and repetition.

How To Become Faster Action Step #3:
Focus on “pushing harder” every time you sprint.

You are faster than you realize but until you develop the mental strength to challenge your body and push harder, stronger, faster than you ever have before you will never realize how fast you actually are.

How To Run Faster (Step 4)

Build stronger and more explosive legs.

Practice, better technique, and stronger mentality are a great foundtaion whne to it comes to learning how to run faster but eventually if you want to take your speed to the next level you will have to make your legs stronger.

Stronger legs produce more force.

This means you can generate more power and move faster.

Stronger legs will help you become faster but also stronger upper body, stronger core, better balance, improved mobility and flexibility. If you want. to become faster focus on becoming a better all around athlete.

How To Become Faster Action Step #4:
Train legs at least x2 per with progressive overload.

Squats and deadlifts are the two most used compound movements for developing strength and power in the lower body. Don’t complicate your training. Master these basic movements.

3 helpful tips for weight training in order to produce speed:

  1. Proper technique is always the most important. Don’t increase the weight if you cannot control the weight properly or you will injure yourself.
  2. Move the weight explosively. You want to become stronger but you need to practice moving the weight faster if you want this effort to transfer into on-field speed. I would recommend going down slow with control and exploding up with speed but still focusing on control and technique.
  3. Progressive overload. If you train the same, you will remain the same. You need to increase the workload each time. Even if it’s 1lb. Track your progress and challenge yourself to do a little more, if you want to become faster.

How To Run Faster (Step 5)

Practice speed drills.

We want to use strength exercises and weight lifting to develop stronger legs so we can produce more force.

We can use speed drills to train our muscle fibres to trigger faster. Combining speed and power will produce some serious speed results.

But…

In order to create these results we must be consistent with our training. You can add speed drills like the ones demonstrate in the earlier video:

How To Run Faster | How To Get Faster at Running | How To Increase Speed for Soccer or Football

Like I mentioned before…

Don’t sprint to get tired. Sprint to get faster.

Do not perform these speed drills to get tired. If you need to take longer breaks in between and focus on performing the exercises as quickly as possible.

How To Become Faster Action Step #5:
Add 5 speed drills to your warm up (complete at least x3 per week).

You can select your own speed drills or use these 5 to increase your speed and sharpness overtime:

  1. Knee drives
  2. Butt kicks
  3. Bounds
  4. Single leg bounds
  5. Arm pumps

How To Run Faster (Step 6)

Become a student of speed.

If you’re on your way to becoming a great soccer player, you have probably already started to study the game. You watch and analyze the players and teams.

Start doing the same for speed.

Who are the fastest soccer players? Analyze them. How do they move? What can you learn from them? What ideas can you take and add to your game?

Who are the fastest athletes in other sports?

Speed is a skill. Speed is science. The more you understand it, the more knowledge you have. Put that knowledge into action and experiment on yourself.

How To Become Faster Action Step #6:
Constantly analyze the running technique of other players.

About The Author

If you don’t know about me…

I used to be a soccer player who struggled with self-confidence. I felt slow, weak, and unmotivated. My coaches didn’t pay much attention to me, my friends laughed at my lack of skills. At one point, I even became so discouraged that I quit the sport altogether.

Enough was enough. I decided to take control of my own development and set out on a journey to become a better soccer player. This path led me on an incredible journey of self-improvement.

I went on to win league and goal-scoring titles, earn awards, lift trophies, and received a college scholarship. I’ve even earned international caps for my country.

I started sharing my knowledge with others and teaching them how to become the best soccer players they could be. My YouTube channel grew to over 500,000 subscribers.

In addition, I coached for several youth clubs in my local city, and even started my own soccer training company. I went on to coach the most prestigious men’s club in my city for several years.
