My goals for the upcoming season

Most players play soccer without purpose.

They play because that’s what they’ve always done.
They play because they enjoy the game.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However…

If your intention is to become the best you can be, you need purpose. You need a reason to train, a reason to give your best effort in every moment.

You need goals.

If you don’t have goals you will lose focus, motivation, and stop improving. Because you have no strong reason pulling you forward.

Below is a list of goals I’ve set for myself for the upcoming season.

Every single morning I review these goals.

This gives me motivation to train, to play hard, to eat properly, and live a healthy lifestyle.
It reminds me that everyday I must become better, otherwise I may let these opportunities slip away.

I want you to do the same thing.

First, review my goals to get an idea of some goals you could set for yourself.
Second, create your own list of goals that you are going to review every morning.

Think about all the opportunities that are in front of you this season:
Big matches, leagues, tournaments, tryouts, personal awards, etc.

Now it’s your turn…

What are some big goals you can set for yourself?

These goals should be challenging and a little scary. These goals must challenge you to improve.

Because the reality is….

You will not be able to achieve them if you remain the player you are today.

Here’s what you need to do:

1) Set goals for yourself.
2) Review them everyday.
3) Assess your progress.

After you set these goals, make a plan on how you are going to make these goals possible. If you want to be the top goalscorer in the league but your not doing anything to improve your finishing, there is a big disconnect between your goals and your plan of action. Set your goals and create a plan of action.

Next, review your goals daily. This will motivate you to stay on track. Each day you will review your goal and realize that you are moving one day closer to that opportunity. Will you be prepared? Or do you need to make adjustments to your training, lifestyle, or discipline?

Finally, assess your progress. For example: 1 month ago you stated that you wanted to make the Varsity Soccer Team but a month has gone by and you haven’t been sticking to your training program? That goal is getting closer but you’re not getting any better? Assess your progress and make the necessary adjustments.

Overall….

I want you to understand the importance of goal setting and constant review.

It’s an extremely powerful tool and an extremely powerful feeling when you finally get to cross the goals you’ve accomplished off your list because of all the hard work you’ve done.

Setting goals is a great first step.

But if you want to become good enough to accomplish those goals,
you are going to have to step up your training.
